Mangalbare (Ilam): Herbal extract essential oils produced in Ilam have gained international recognition, with exports reaching France. The essential oil manufacturing plant, operated by Nitya Raj Dahal in Maijogmai Rural Municipality, has been successfully shipping its products abroad.

Established 13 years ago, the factory began exporting essential oils last year. Dahal stated that the factory primarily extracts essential oils from mugwort, black juniper, mint, and dhasingre (wintergreen). Currently, only mugwort, cypress, and mint extracts are being exported overseas.

Looking ahead, the factory plans to expand its production to include essential oils from geranium, wild marigold (black mint), and rosemary, among other locally available herbs. Dahal noted that foreign customers have started appreciating Nepali natural herbal products, encouraging them to cater to international demand.

As an Osho follower, Dahal shared that many foreign visitors who come for meditation at his place purchase his products and take them home. Initially, interest in the essential oils was low, but as awareness grew about their benefits, demand increased significantly.

The pricing of the essential oils varies depending on the herb. Black juniper essential oil sells for Rs 2,500 per kilogram, while mugwort oil is priced at Rs 6,000 per kilogram. Mint and wintergreen essential oils are both sold at Rs 7,000 per kilogram.

Dahal cultivates various herbs on 35 ropanis of land and also sources raw materials from local farmers. Keshav Dahal, a local resident, highlighted that commercial production of herbs has helped utilize vacant land in the village, contributing to the local economy.
